Subject: Vac: 0211.20: Vacature voor twee aio's bij het VIDI-project 'Derivations and Evaluations' (generatieve syntaxis) aan de Universiteit van Tilburg (deadline: wo 15 januari 2003)

Vacant Position at the University of Tilburg

The Faculty of Arts at the University of Tilburg (The Netherlands) announces one or, provided that the budgetary conditions are met, two full-time positions for a PhD student. These positions are connected to the VIDI-project "Derivations and Evaluations" (vacancy number 810.02.17). Starting date of the positions is September 1, 2003.

The VIDI-project "Derivations and Evaluations" aims at showing that the two dominant frameworks in generative syntax, the Minimalist Program and Optimality Theory, which are generally seen as incompatible and competing approaches to language, can be fruitfully combined within one overall theory of grammar. We are looking for PhD students who, in collaboration with the other researchers, are willing to participate in this project. The domain of investigation is the clause, which has been divided into the left and right periphery and the middle field; the two PhD-students will investigate phenomena in respectively the left and the right periphery. See http://fdlwww.kub.nl/~broekhui/vacature/vacant%20position.htm for a more detailed description of the project/subprojects.

The PhD.-students will be affiliated to the Models of Grammar group at the University of Tilburg. As members of this group, the students will also be part of the Dutch Research School in Linguistic (LOT) and participate in the Summer and Winter schools organized by it. The students will also be trained in the Minimalist Program, Optimality Theory and the Derivation and Evaluation model by the leader of the research group. After four years, the PhD.-projects should result in a doctoral thesis.

Requirements:

  • The ability and willingness to participate in a team is a prerequisite.
  • A thorough training in generative syntax: knowledge of the minimalist program and/or Optimality Theory is a recommendation.
  • Affinity with the empirical domains mentioned in the project description.

    Salary:
The selected candidate will get a four year contract (full-time) as a PhD.-student. The salary will be EUR 1.586 at the start of the project and increases to EUR 2.151 in the fourth year.

    Applications:
Applicants should include a curriculum vitae, a short description of the contribution (s)he thinks (s)he can make to the project, a sample of his/her linguistic work, and the names of three referents in their written application. The application has to be received by January 15, 2003, to:
