The Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages intends to make a temporary appointment in Dutch language and literature, at the level of University Lecturer, to replace Mrs Elsa Strietman during her leave of absence. The appointment will be for a period of nine months, from 1 October 2004 to 30 June 2005. The salary will be œ24,097 p.a., pro rata for nine months.

Candidates should normally have, or be close to completing, a PhD in some area of Low Countries studies. They should preferably have some teaching experience, full details of which should be provided in their application.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses for the following papers in the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos: Introduction to the Dutch language: literature and history (DUA3); Dutch literature, history, and culture, since 1860 (Du.1); The literature, history, and visual arts of the Netherlands, from 1585 to 1700 (Du.4); and Translation from and into Dutch (C1). Details of the relevant courses and prescribed texts can be found on the departmental website: http://www.mml.cam.ac.uk/dutch/

In addition to giving lectures and language courses, the successful candidate can expect to be asked to undertake College supervisions (including essay-writing in Dutch), for which additional payment is made. He or she will also take responsibility, under the guidance of the Head of the Department of Other Languages, for all aspects of the administration of the Dutch Section, including overseeing teaching arrangements, collaboration with the Language Assistant in Dutch, advising students on their year abroad arrangements, dissertations and translation projects, setting and marking Tripos examinations, dealing with routine correspondence and enquiries, library matters, and participation in Faculty Open Days.

This is a full-time appointment and the lecturer will therefore be expected to be resident in Cambridge during the week in Full Term, and to be available for administrative duties, as required, during the vacations.

There are no application forms. Candidates should send FIVE COPIES of a full curriculum vitae and the names of two referees who are in a position to comment on their academic work and any teaching experience, to: Dr David Holton, Head of the Department of Other Languages, Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages, Raised Faculty Building, Sidgwick Avenue, Cambridge CB3 9DA. A telephone number and e-mail address should also be supplied. The closing-date for applications is 7 May 2004. Candidates are requested to ask their referees to write directly by the same date. Short-listed candidates will be called for interview in late May or early June. Informal enquiries may be addressed to Mrs Strietman by e-mail (es10004@cam.ac.uk) or telephone +44 1223 335016.
