Vacature Dublin

DEPARTMENT OF GERMANIC STUDIES
THE UNIVERSITY OF DUBLIN, TRINITY COLLEGE

LECTOR FOR DUTCH

A lector is required from September 2004 for this post offered in association with the Nederlandse Taalunie. The initial appointment is for one year; renewal may be possible subject to performance and funding.

The Dutch lector is responsible for the following:

  • planning of the whole Dutch language program in consultation with the permanent staff.
  • teaching language courses courses (Language acquisition, Reading) for first year (ab initio), second year and fourth year students.
  • teaching an introductory course in Nederlandkunde.
  • the marking and examining duties attached to this teaching.
  • the preparation and conduct of oral and written examinations.
  • contact hours up to twelve hours per week. This may include some evening teaching.
  • the Lector also coordinates additional teaching provided by a Harting scholar and a Dutch language assistant, mainly Dutch conversation classes.
Classes in Dutch are generally small, usually fewer than ten students. Most students of Dutch are on the Germanic Languages degree program, in which students study German and Dutch for four years and Swedish for three, plus historical and modern linguistics, medieval studies and optional literature courses. All Germanic Languages students spend their third year abroad, including a period at a Dutch or Flemish university. A small number of students of Dutch come from other degrees in the Department or from elsewhere in the University.

A Dutch intensive week with visiting speakers, and social activities such as a highly successful traditional Sinte Klaas visit, are important parts of the Dutch teaching team's contribution to the life of the Department. The Department is seeking to strengthen and develop its Dutch programs. There is considerable scope for initiative and innovation. We have close relations with the Nederlandse Taalunie, and with the Netherlands and Belgian embassies in Dublin. Liaison with these bodies, and with the Dutch business and other communities in Dublin, are part of the Lector's role. There are important medieval and early modern materials in the TCD Library (the Fagel collection) that offer considerable research potential.

Applicants should have as many as possible of the following:

  • a degree (MA or equivalent) with a major in Dutch or another relevant discipline
  • native or near-native command of Dutch
  • good English
  • qualifications and/or experience in teaching Dutch as a foreign language
The appointment is for one year in the first instance but there is a possibility of renewal subject to finance and performance. It may be possible to rent a room on campus, but this is not guaranteed. Salary: EUR 21211 for a 12-month contract.

Applications (by letter, fax or e-mail), consisting of a curriculum vitae, covering letter and the names and e-mail addresses of two referees, should be sent to:
