Panel Emblem Books: Text and Image

Call for Papers: "Emblem Books: Text and Image"

The Bibliographical Society of America will be proposing a panel at the 14th annual conference of the Society for the History of Authorship, Reading, and Publishing (SHARP), which will meet at the Hague July 12-14, 2006.

BSA's theme at the SHARP 2006 Annual meeting will be "Emblem Books: Text and Image." The panel is being organized by Michael Laird (New York) and James N. Green (Library Company of Philadelphia). The panel will be moderated by Michael Laird.

From scholars in all disciplines we seek proposals for papers that examine emblem books in relation to a broad range of questions, including: What modes of reading text and image are associated with emblem books? How did The Netherlands become the vanguard of the literary-pictorial genre of emblem books, which had originated in Italy in the sixteenth century? Why were Dutch emblem books so widely translated? How did the production of emblem books become an international enterprise? How did emblematics, formerly the dominion of learned academies and students of the occult, become positively "middle-class"? Why did emblematists from the Netherlands and elsewhere begin creating religious emblems, which subsequently became instruments of both Calvinist and Jesuit propaganda?

Please send abstracts (maximum of 150 words) and one-paragraph CVs to both Michael Laird, bibliograph@verizon.net and James N. Green, jgreen@librarycompany.org by 15 October 2005.

Note that speakers and chairs must be members of both BSA and SHARP upon registering for the conference or they cannot be included in the program. For additional information about SHARP, please visit http://www.sharpweb.org.
