SHARP Master Class 2006

The SHARP 2006 Conference's Organizing Committee invites PhD Students to register for a special Pre-Conference activity: a Master Class in the History of the Manuscript and the Printed Book on Tuesday, 11 July, 2006.
Location: Koninklijke Bibliotheek/ National Library of the Netherlands (close to The Hague Central Station). This initiative is financially supported by the National Library, the Huygens Institute, the Huizinga Graduate School of Cultural History and the Netherlands Graduate School for Literary Studies, so participation will be free.

The Master Class will consist of two sections: Section I (pre-1800) Master prof. Gabriele Müller-Oberhäuser (University of Münster, Germany) [http://www.anglistik.uni-muenster.de/Forschen/] Section II (post-1800) Master prof. Jonathan Rose (Drew University, Madison, New Jersey, USA) [http://www.depts.drew.edu/hist/jrose.html].

The selected PhD students will be invited to before 1 March, 2006 submit a synopsis of their ongoing PhD research to be distributed among all participants before their meeting in July, 2006. During the Master Class, there will be ample opportunity to thorougly discuss one's own work with the Master and with the other participants. Working language will be English. Further details will be published on the Conference webpages at http://www.kb.nl/SHARP2006. After the Master Class, the persons present may wish to join the planned inaugural meeting of a Continental European PhD Network in Book History on Tuesday, 11 July, late afternoon. The same evening they may attend the lecture given by Robert Darnton, Fellow of the National Library in June-July, 2006.

If you are interested, please send an e-mail to SHARP2006@KB.NL indicating your name, address, name of institution and of the person(s) supervising your PhD work and attach a description (max. 300 words) describing your project.

We announce this opportunity at an early moment as we hope this helps our PhD students to decide not only to attend the 14th SHARP Conference as a whole but also to submit a paper (abstract) (deadline 30 November, 2005). Dissertation supervisors, please bring this message to the attention of your students.

On behalf of the The Hague 2006 Committee,
